In today’s world, cities have become major hubs of the human population. It is anticipated that in the future a significant number of the population would be living in cities. One of the main requirements for smart cities is to have connected cities, meaning all possible physical objects in the smart city would be connected to one another using suitable communication systems and networks. To realize connected cities, communication systems need to be advanced and reliable in terms of performance, security, privacy, and practicality of implementation. While expectations are there to realize smart communication systems for the success of smart cities, there exist several opportunities and challenges. The principal objective of this special issue is to present the latest research results on the advances of communications systems and technologies in smart cities.
This special issue seeks high-quality, original, unpublished work in the following emerging areas in the field of advanced communication systems in the smart cities including but not limited to:
- Advanced wireless ICT (Information and Communications Technologies) systems for the smart cities: 5G, 6G, and beyond wireless communications systems
- Smart technologies in sensing, actuating, communications, monitoring, automation, and communications infrastructure.
The Internet of Things (IoT)
- Communications big data and advanced data technologies in the smart cities including clouds and fogs technologies, information processing, and data analytics
- Cyber-physical systems
- Advanced communications electronics for the smart cities
- Micro-nano-scale communications systems for the smart cities
- Communications systems for the Smart Grid paradigm
- Communications systems for smart healthcare: smart wearable devices, systems, and networks and medical IoT, advances in biomedical and nano-bio communications and networks for emerging smart healthcare applications
- Artificial intelligence and machine learning in smart cities including smart computer networks, machine intelligence, and machine-to-machine (M2M) communications
- Security, cybersecurity, and privacy for communications systems in the smart cities
