Overview

The vast majority of research in scene understanding is applied in urban and structured environments. Unfortunately, these methods often fail when used in unstructured environments with challenging lighting conditions and many natural objects in the scene.

These conditions require different model assumptions and robust algorithms.

The main objective of this workshop is to create a platform for researchers, from both academia and industry, to explore fundamental research and applications on scene understanding in unstructured environments. It aims to foster discussion and exchanges, ideally creating a long-term flourishing communication channel in the community.

The workshop will take place on Tuesday September 28, 2021 14:00 – 18:15 CEST / 8:00 – 12:15 EDT as part of the DAGM German Conference on Pattern Recognition (GCPR). The conference will be organized as a virtual conference. We therefore invite the international research community to participate. The registration for the conference and workshop are free of charge.  About the workshop:
This workshop will explore challenges in the analysis and assessment
of potential developing hazards to advance the research and
development of hazard perception in autonomous driving. This requires
solving the situation awareness by accurate detection and anticipation
of positions, movements and actions performed by multiple road users
(pedestrians, vehicles, cyclists and so on) that are a key to address
the anticipation of a developing potential hazard.

We welcome submissions on the following topics, but are not limited to:

Description: Human interaction has been a central topic in psychology and social sciences, aiming at explaining the complex underlying mechanisms of communication with respect to cognitive, affective and behavioral perspectives. From a computational point of view, research in dyadic and small group interactions enables the development of automatic approaches for detection, understanding, modeling and synthesis of individual and interpersonal social signals and dynamics. Many human-centered applications for good (e.g., early diagnosis and intervention, augmented telepresence and personalized assistive agents) depend on devising solutions for such tasks. 

Verbal and nonverbal communication channels are used in dyadic and small group interactions to convey our goals and intentions while building a common ground. During interactions, people influence each other based on the cues they perceive. However, the way we perceive, interpret, react, and adapt to them depends on a myriad of factors (e.g., our personal characteristics, either stable or transient; the relationship and shared history between individuals; the characteristics of the situation and task at hand; societal norms; and environmental factors). To analyze individual behaviors during a conversation, the joint modeling of participants is required due to the existing dyadic or group interdependencies. While these aspects are usually contemplated in non-computational dyadic research, context- and interlocutor-aware computational approaches are still scarce, largely due to the lack of datasets providing contextual metadata in different situations and populations. 

Topics and Motivation: In line with these, we would like to bring together researchers in the field and from related disciplines to discuss the advances and new challenges on the topic of dyadic and small group interactions. We want to put a spotlight on the strengths and limitations of the existing approaches, and define the future directions of the field. In this context, we accept papers/brief book chapters in form of tutorials, surveys, and/or novel technical/scientific contributions addressing the issues related to, but not limited to, these topics:

  • Detection, understanding, modeling, prediction and synthesis of individual and interpersonal social signals and dynamics;

  • Verbal / nonverbal communication analysis in dyadic and small groups;

  • Contextual analysis in dyadic and small groups;

  • Datasets, annotation protocols and bias discovering/mitigation methods in dyadic and small groups;

  • Interpretability / Explainability in dyadic and small groups;

Researchers that express their interest in contributing to the PMLR proceedings by October 1st may be invited to present a snippet of their research during the ICCV’21 Understanding Social Behavior in Dyadic and Small Group Interactions (DYAD) Workshop (https://chalearnlap.cvc.uab.cat/workshop/44/description/) if they wish to in order to increase visibility of their research and possibly foster multidisciplinary collaboration.

The automatic understanding of Sign Languages is a must to ease integration for millions of deaf people around the world. The last two decades have witnessed increasing research efforts to solve this problem. Many of these proposals were based on somehow intrusive sensors to capture the 3D rapid movements of arms, hands and fingers (data gloves, colored gloves, mocap, ultrasound, etc.), but, for the past ten years, RGB and depth sensors have been becoming the mainstream solution to simultaneously capturing the communicative channels related to hand movements, face expressivity and whole upper body movements. The latest advancements in human activity recognition from visual cues, rooted in highly efficient deep learning models, have also pushed research in Sign Language Recognition as a closely related application. We are in an excitement moment when it comes to pushing socially required applications to reduce communicative barriers.

This Special Issue seeks to bring together innovative research and development solutions in the area of Sign Language Recognition, using any kind of sensing devices. Comparative studies on different sensing devices are also very welcome. Authors are invited to submit original articles across the full development stack (hardware, system and software), including architectures, techniques and tools for sensing and modeling the complex movement details of signing and the proper decoding of sign sequences. This may include, but is not limited to, sensing modalities, innovative solutions for data collection, strategies for data augmentation, sensor fusion, spatio-temporal representation, computational reduction, model optimization for mobile devices, real-world applications, etc.

This topic is very well-fitted to the scope of the journal because using proper acquisition sensors allows trustful and discriminative information which is critical for sign language representation and, then, recognition. This journal also accepts the algorithmic processing of sensed signals, something that is rapidly evolving for SLR.
