MSc students, PhD students, postdocs, junior/senior academics, and industry practitioners will be typical profiles of the attendants. In fact, the Advanced Course is not a summer school suited only for younger scholars. Rather, a significant proportion of seasoned investigators are regularly present among the attendees, often senior and junior faculty at their own institutions. The balanced audience that we strive to maintain in each Advanced Course greatly contributes to the development of intense cross-disciplinary debates among faculty and participants that typically address the most advanced and emerging areas of each topic.

Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs, or drones) are becoming more and more important to many industries, promising simplified logistics, cost reductions, increased safety for humans, quicker response times and more accurate results, when compared to traditional procedures. Drones are highly useful thanks to their easy deployment, their aerial point-of-view and their ability to access difficult-to-reach spaces. Recent advances in aerial robotics and AI have already pushed drone automation to an unprecedented degree in various application domains, such as infrastructure inspection and maintenance, aerial cinematography, search and rescue operations, etc.

CBMI (eighteenth edition) aims at bringing together the various communities involved in all aspects of content-based multimedia indexing for retrieval, browsing, management, visualization and analytics. Topics of interest to the CBMI community include, but are not limited to, the following: audio and visual and multimedia indexing, multimodal and cross-modal indexing, deep learning for multimedia indexing, visual content extraction, audio (speech, music, etc.) content extraction, identification and tracking of semantic regions and events, social media analysis…

The eighteenth edition of CBMI will be organized by the CRIStAL laboratory at University of Lille, Lille, France, following the successful previous editions of Toulouse 1999, Brescia 2001, Rennes 2003, Riga 2005, Bordeaux 2007, London 2008, Chania 2009, Grenoble 2010, Madrid 2011, Annecy 2012, Veszprem 2013, Klagenfurt 2014, Prague 2015, Bucharest 2016, Firenze 2017, La Rochelle 2018, and Dublin 2019.

Authors are encouraged to submit previously unpublished research papers in the broad field of content-based multimedia indexing and applications. We wish to highlight significant contributions addressing the main problem of search and retrieval but also the related and equally important issues of multimedia content management, user interaction, large-scale search, learning in retrieval, social media indexing and retrieval. Additional special sessions are planned in areas such as deep learning for retrieval, social media retrieval, cultural heritage, surveillance and security.

Authors can submit full length (6 pages – to be presented as oral presentation) or short papers (4 pages – to be presented as posters). Papers can be submitted to the regular paper sessions, demo session, or to one of the special sessions. Additionally demonstration papers (up to 4 pages) may also be submitted that highlight interesting and novel demos of CBMI-related technologies. The submissions are peer reviewed in a single blind process. The language of the conference is English. The CBMI 2021 conference adheres to the IEEE paper formatting guidelines. When preparing your submission, please follow the IEEE guidelines given by IEEE at the Manuscript Templates for Conference Proceedings.

The CBMI proceedings are traditionally indexed and distributed by IEEE Xplore and ACM DL. In addition, authors of certain best papers of the conference will be invited to submit extended versions of their contributions to a special issue of a leading journal in the field (e.g. MTAP – Springer), and other best papers will be invited to submit extended versions of their contributions in a book (ISTE/WILEY publisher).

## STUDENT PARTICIPATION:
We strongly encourage students to participate in CBMI-21 event and submit their research. We strongly believe in their power and they are the future of the research in content-based multimedia indexing. For these reasons and for the first time in the history of the conference, the 2021 edition of CBMI with support of ACM SIGMM (www.sigmm.org), will sponsor several students, authors of papers submitted and accepted by CBMI-21, and being corresponding author of a paper. The student status will be recognized only to PhDs and master students. Certain students will be totally sponsored, including registration fees, accommodations and travel expenses. Other students will be partly sponsored, including substantial reduction in the registration fees, no cut-backs to the students’ conference experience, and budget accommodation options and arrangement for room sharing.

Furthermore, in this edition, prizes will be awarded to the best student poster presentations of CBMI2021. All the participants registered to CBMI2021 as student will be automatically admitted to the selection for the awards. All the papers accepted as poster presentation by the Technical Program Committee (TPC), from students will be considered for the awards, given that a full-paper manuscript has been submitted.

The student poster awards committee will evaluate the nominated contributions during the poster sessions of CBMI2021. The evaluation criteria will be independently established by the Committee before the conference and will take into account the scientific content as well as the technical quality of the posters.

The Student Poster Awards will be announced during the Gala Dinner, on June 29th.

AIMS AND SCOPE
Earth Observation (EO)/Remote Sensing is an ever-growing field of investigation where computer vision, machine learning, and signal/image processing meet. The general objective is to provide large-scale, homogeneous information about processes occurring at the surface of the Earth exploiting data collected by airborne and spaceborne sensors. Earth Observation implies the need for multiple inference tasks, ranging from detection to registration, data mining, multi-sensor, multi-resolution, multi-temporal, and multi-modality fusion, and regression, to name just a few. It comprises ample applications like location-based services, online mapping services, large-scale surveillance, 3D urban modelling, navigation systems, natural hazard forecast and response, climate change monitoring, virtual habitat modelling, etc. The sheer amount of data calls for highly automated scene interpretation workflows.

This workshop, held for its fifth edition at the CVPR 2021, aims at fostering collaboration between the computer vision as well as machine learning disciplines and the remote sensing community to boost automated interpretation of EO data. EarthVision will additionally help build cooperation within the CVPR community for this highly challenging and quickly evolving field that has a big impact on human society, economy, industry, and the planet.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
A complete paper should be submitted using the EarthVision templates provided on the workshop website. The paper length must not exceed 8 pages (excluding references) and formatting follows CVPR 2021 instructions. All manuscripts will be subject to a double-blind review process, i.e. authors must not identify themselves on the submitted papers.

Papers are to be submitted using the dedicated submission platform on the Workshop website (https://www.grss-ieee.org/earthvision2021/submission.html). By submitting a manuscript, the authors guarantee that it has not been previously published or accepted for publication in a substantially similar form. S+SSPR 2020 [Program and Registration]

The conference will take place over 2 days, Thursday 21 and Friday 22 January. Each day will see a 1 hour online discussion session (on Zoom) sandwiched between two keynotes, one in the morning and one in the afternoon (CET).

We have an outstanding line up of speakers for this edition of S+SSPR: Michael Bronstein (Twitter, Imperial College London, and University of Lugano), Nicholas Carlini (Google Inc.), Fabio Roli (University of Cagliari, winner of the Pierre Devijver award), and Max Welling (Qualcomm and University of Amsterdam).
