AIM AND SCOPE

Neurodevelopmental deficits (NDD) are defined by the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) as impairments on the development of the brain or of the central nervous system, with a typical onset in early childhood. These disorders are characterized by specific limitations on language, attention or motor control abilities and on a global impairment of social skills (e.g., autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, specific learning disorder).
Recent years were characterized by a growing interest on the use of new technologies for children with NDD. Social robots, in particular, emerged as tools endowed with a physical embodiment, capable of simplifying the complexity of the social interactions. Experimental evidence suggests how such robots could be used by clinicians as instruments capable of achieving finer diagnoses and as tools for cognitive remediation. Although most research in this field may be regarded as preliminary, the use of social robots in NDD has the potential of achieving a continuous long-term observation of the children, allowing a finer tailoring of the therapies, treating each “unique” child for his/her “unique” problem.
The emergence of socially assistive robots tailored to the needs of NDDs lays on an interdisciplinary effort involving engineers, psychiatrists, psychologists, cognitive scientists, instructors and families. By presenting scientific advances on the use of social robotics in NDDs, the goal of this workshop is to foster new ideas, discussions and interdisciplinary collaborations between all the stakeholders involved in NDDs caring, as well as between research and the healthcare industry.

The main aim of this workshop will be to provide a venue for young researchers to share their recent advances as well as to listen and interact with senior researchers with different backgrounds working in NDDs. This workshop will focus on metrics, models, techniques, algorithms that enable social robots to be effective tools in the NDD care, in clinical contexts, as well as outside the hospital.

Topics of interest will include, but will not be limited to:
– Robot-aided diagnosis;
– Robot-assisted therapies;
– Personalized interactions and tailored interventions with robots;
– Social interaction in joint activities with robots;
– Socio-cognitive skills training;
– Robots as communication partners;
– Attention and engagement measures in NDDs;
– Affective interaction and emotional understanding;
– Imitation, perspective taking and empathy;
– Fine motor skills evaluation;
– Social robots in special education;
– Intensive intervention with social robots;
– Assistive social robots at home;
– Specific field applications based on ABA or ESDM approaches.

– Full six-page paper submissions will be selected for either an oral presentation or a poster presentation.
– Two-page poster abstract submissions will be selected to encourage discussion. The posters will have a 1 minute “teaser” presentation.
All contributions will be subjected to blind peer review by a minimum of two independent experts in the field.

VIDEO SUBMISSIONS AND DEMOS

Videos are accepted as contributions focused on showing field activities, interventions and achievements involving the use of social robots in NDDs.

Video contributions according to the following specifications should be submitted by directly contacting the chairs of the workshop.
– Duration: between 5 and 20 minutes.
– Format (only one of the following should be used): mpeg, mp4, mpg
– Minimum video quality: 720p
– Minimum frame rate (fps): 24
– Codecs: Do not use special codecs in order to provide as much portability across platforms as possible.
– Audio is optional, but lack of audio should have minimal impact on the comprehension of the video.
– Structure: The video must include at the beginning a video cover with the title, authors and affiliation and the credits at the end.

Submissions are due on February 29th, 2020.

Time and space for live demonstrations will also be granted to willing contributors.

Objective  & Scope

Manifold Learning (ML) has been the subject of intensive study over the past two decades in the computer vision and machine learning communities. Originally, manifold learning techniques aim to identify the underlying structure (usually low-dimensional) of data from a set of observations (in the form of high-dimensional vectors). The recent advances in deep learning make one wonder whether data-driven learning techniques can benefit from the theoretical findings from ML studies. This innocent looking question becomes more important if we note that deep learning techniques are notorious for being data-hungry and supervised (mostly). On the contrary, many ML techniques unravel data structures without much supervision. This workshop considers itself as the frontier to raise the question of how classical ML techniques can help deep learning and vice versa and targets studies and discussions that bridge the gap. Aside from the above, the use of Riemannian geometry in tackling/modelling various problems in computer vision has seen a surge of interest recently. The benefits of geometrical thinking can be understood by noting that in many applications, data naturally lies on smooth manifolds, hence distances and similarity measures computed by considering the geometry of the space naturally result in better and more accurate modelling. Various studies demonstrate the benefits of geometrical techniques in analysing images and videos such as face recognition, activity recognition, object detection and classification, biomedical image analysis, and structure-from-motion to name a few. Besides being mathematically appealing, Riemannian computations based on the geometry of underlying manifolds are often faster and more stable than their classical counterpartsIn this workshop, we will explore the latest development in machine learning techniques developed to work on/benefit from the non-linear manifolds. We will also target challenges and future directions related to the application of non-linear geometry, Riemannian manifolds in computer vision and machine learning. This workshop also acts as an opportunity for cross-disciplinary discussions and collaborations.

Accepted papers will be presented in Poster format during the Conference and papers will be published in Conference Proceedings but will not go to IEEEXplore. Best papers will be published in a national journal.


PAPER SUBMISSION

We invite authors to submit high-quality full papers reporting original and novel research results on all above topics. Papers should be written in English or Spanish, bu at least the abstract MUST be in english, unpublished and not submitted elsewhere. Full papers must be formatted as the standard IEEE double-column conference templates and submitted exclusively using the Easy Chair linkMaximum 5 pages are allowed for each paper, including all illustrations and references.

Llamada de Participación – XXIV ELAVIO 2020

ALIO e IFORS se complacen en anunciar la llamada de participación a la vigésima cuarta edición de la Escuela Latinoamericana de Verano en Investigación Operativa (XXIV ELAVIO 2020), que se llevará a cabo en la Ciudad de Arequipa, Perú, del 19 al 24 de Julio del año 2020. La finalidad principal de la ELAVIO es incentivar y fortalecer los estudios científicos realizados por investigadores jóvenes en el área de Investigación Operativa, capacitándolos sobre temas que son el estado del arte en esta área, y promoviendo futuras colaboraciones científicas entre investigadores jóvenes e investigadores experimentados de diferentes regiones latino-ibero-americanas y del mundo.

Para cumplir este propósito, la ELAVIO 2020 reunirá a varios investigadores renombrados como oradores invitados quienes impartirán cursos cortos y tutoriales (vea la sección  Oradores y Cursos en nuestra página), además de evaluar los trabajos de investigación presentados por los investigadores jóvenes y de comentar mejoras a estos.

Los lenguajes oficiales de la ELAVIO son Español, Portugués e Inglés. Los cursos cortos, los tutoriales, y las presentaciones de los participantes se darán en cualquiera de estos lenguajes (con slides en Inglés).

Becas

La organización de la ELAVIO 2020 está ofreciendo 45 becas para investigadores jóvenes. Estas becas cubren los costos de alojamiento y alimentación de los estudiantes seleccionados.

IFORS ofrece una beca para un participante de un país en desarrollo que cubrirá los pasajes aéreos del participante (hasta cierto límite), mientras que la organización del ELAVIO cubrirá los costos de alojamiento y alimentación del participante. Los requerimientos para los postulantes a la beca IFORS están detallados en nuestra página.

EURO ofrece una beca para un participante de la Comunidad Europea que cubrirá los pasajes aéreos del participante (hasta cierto límite), mientras que la organización del ELAVIO cubrirá los costos de alojamiento y alimentación del participante. Los requerimientos para los postulantes a la beca EURO están detallados en nuestra página.
