RAPIDO 2020: Workshop on Rapid Simulation and Performance Evaluation: Methods and Tools 2020

Goal of the Workshop 
The focus of the RAPIDO workshop is on methods and tools for rapid simulation and performance evaluation in embedded and high performance system design. Given continuous advances in chip technology, it is to be expected that future-generation systems on chip will integrate numerous units on a single die, including multiple (heterogeneous) processor cores, multiple levels of (shared/private) caches or memories, and dedicated accelerators, which will be glued together through a network on-chip (NoC). The design space is huge though and several design metrics should be considered as well for selecting the optimal system configuration. Despite several years of research, the early stage design phase still requires to be supported by innovative design methodologies and tools for simulation, exploration and performance evaluation. RAPIDO seeks for original research papers that face this challenge for embedded and high performance computing systems.
Topics of Interest include, but are not limited to
* Rapid simulation techniques targeted at novel architectures: Multi-cores, 3D-architectures, FPGA based heterogeneous Multi-cores/MPSoC, ...
* Variability and power/energy consumption in performance estimation and simulation techniques
* High-level abstraction modeling, e.g., Transactional Level Modeling, Analytical Modeling, Trace-Driven Simulation …
* Design space exploration for heterogeneous high-performance and embedded systems
* Dynamic binary translation for fast simulation and DSE
* Experience reports using existing simulators and tools, Benchmarking and simulator validation, Early stage prototype of innovative architectures

Submission Guidelines 
* All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference. 
* Electronic paper submission requires a full paper, up to 6 double-column ACM format pages, including figures and references. Up to 2 extra-pages can be requested for free to the organizing committee. The Space & Terrestrial Autonomous Robotic Systems (STARS) Laboratory at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS) has an opening for a talented postdoctoral researcher to work on multiple projects in the area of collaborative mobile manipulation (perception, navigation, and planning). More details follow below.

THE STARS LABORATORY & THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO:

 

The STARS Laboratory envisions a future in which in which robotic systems are pervasive – widely deployed in assistive roles across the spectrum of human activity (robots everywhere!), persistent – able to operate reliably and independently for long durations, and perceptive – aware of their environment, and capable of acting intelligently when confronted with new situations and experiences. We carry out research at the nexus of sensing, planning, and control, with a focus on the study of fundamental problems related to perception, representation, and understanding of the world. One main focus of our work is collaborative mobile manipulation. An important aspect of our research is the extensive experimental validation of our theoretical results, to ensure that our work is useful in the real world. We are committed to robotics as a science, and emphasize open source contributions and reproducible experimentation. The Director of STARS (Prof. Kelly) holds the Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Collaborative Robotics.

 

Through STARS, you will join an outstanding group of researchers as part of the recently-launched University of Toronto Robotics Institute. The U of T RI is the focus of a major institutional effort to expand and unify robotics research and teaching efforts across all U of T campuses. The University of Toronto is consistently ranked as the top postsecondary institution in Canada, and among the best worldwide (#18 in this year’s THE World University Rankings). JOB DESCRIPTION & OPPORTUNITIES:

 

The successful applicant will carry out research related to collaborative mobile manipulation – specific projects involve certifiably optimal estimation and planning, multisensor fusion for manipulation, tactile sensing, semantic mapping, and deep and reinforcement learning. The postdoc will be expected to guide and shape new research in these areas. As a STARS postdoc, you will help to push the state of the art in the field, using cutting-edge hardware.

 

The position is designed to provide the postdoctoral researcher with training in all key areas relevant to an academic career: research, grant-writing, and student supervision and mentoring. Depending on the qualifications and interests of the successful applicant, there may be an opportunity to teach or co-teach at the undergraduate or graduate level.

 

SKILLSET DESIRED:

 

The most important qualifications for the position are a passion for robots and a strong motivation to substantially enhance their capabilities – you should have a deep desire to see robots transition out of labs and factories and into human-centric environments (where they will work alongside people).

Applicants should possess the following (in rough order of importance):

 

A Ph.D. in a robotics-related field with a strong mathematical background (math and physics applicants welcome).

Excellent spoken and written English language skills.

Programming experience in C++, Python, and/or MATLAB.

Experience with computer vision and multisensor perception (nice to have).

Experience with robotic manipulation, tactile sensing, and grasping (nice to have).

Experience with the Robot Operating System (ROS) (nice to have).

 

STARTING DATE:

 

The starting date is negotiable, beginning as early as January 15, 2020, and preferably no later than March 1, 2020. Applications will be evaluated starting on November 15 and will continue to be accepted and reviewed until the position is filled.

Post-doc position at HRI Laboratory, Kyoto University

The HRI Laboratory (http://www.robot.soc.i.kyoto-u.ac.jp/en/) at Kyoto University (Kyoto, Japan) is recruiting an outstanding young (post-doctoral) researcher. Our laboratory has strong focus on human-robot social interaction in various human-populated environments, e.g. shopping mall. We have a vacancy in a project under a research funding (till March 2023) about human-robot interaction, human-robot symbiosis, and human-robot moral relationships. Thus, we seek for a person who can contribute to this project (http://www.robot.soc.i.kyoto-u.ac.jp/en/english-crest-project/).

 

In this project, we study social robots that operate in such environments like stores and shopping malls, and aim to develop social interaction of social robots for such a service industry. The project is also motivated by the fact that children sometimes abuse/bully a social robot, which is known as the "robot abuse" problem, and aim to moderate such problems by better establishing moral-relationships between robots and people.

We are seeking applications from young researchers with special interest in human-robot interaction. Candidates with specific expertise/background in the following domains are particularly welcome this time:

– Human behavior recognition using range-finder and/or depth cameras

– Machine learning, such as DNN (deep neural network), for visual and/or auditory perception in context of HRI

– Data-driven HRI, i.e. learning social behavior/interaction from big data

– Human behavior modeling for social robots

– Robotics relevant to social robots

 

The employment contract is made for each Japanese fiscal year (starting on April and finishing on March of next year); however, the starting period is flexible (after April 2020). Extensions will be expected based on the annual evaluation.

 

The wage will be decided based on experience and expertise.

Postdoctoral Position

A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available at Laboratory of Ambient and Wearable Systems (http://claws.eng.ua.edu), Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Alabama. The laboratory is engaged in several cutting edge research projects developing wearable devices for physiological and behavioral monitoring. The laboratory develops state-of-the-art technologies working in close collaboration with leading clinical researchers in the areas of nutrition and obesity, rehabilitation, physical activity monitoring, addiction and others.

We are seeking a Research Associate with strong background in machine learning and/or mobile and wearable computing. The postdoctoral research will participate in an NIH-funded project and will be responsible for:

  1. Development of machine learning models describing human behaviors;
  2. Development of mobile and cloud-based software for real-time analysis of data and images from wearable sensors;
  3. Working in a interdisciplinary team, interacting with researchers in multiple areas of science and engineering;
  4. Supervision of graduate and undergraduate students

 

Desired qualifications in the order of importance:

  1. Extensive practical experience and strong foundation in machine learning and deep learning (MATLAB, TensorFlow or similar).
  2. Experience with image processing / computer vision.
  3. Experience with cloud computing, cloud development ecosystem.
  4. Programming skills with proficiency in MATLAB, Python, Java, Javascript and/or R. 
  5. Familiarity with regression analysis and statistical techniques;
  6. Familiarity with biomedical signals and signal processing.

 

The candidate should have good oral and written English communication skills, be capable of independent work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team, publish results in academic journals and participate in grant proposal preparation. Applicants should have a Ph.D. degree in Electrical, Computer or Biomedical Engineering or a related field. The initial appointment is for a period of one year with potential for further extension up to 4 years. The review of applications will start immediately and will continue until the position is filled.
