Expositor: Jorge Torres Villarrubia. Profesor Supervisor: Jorge Baier

The Department of Computer Science at UC is pleased to invite you to this Friday, September 12, in room Javier Pinto, San Agustin Building 4th Floor at San Joaquin Campus, from 11:30 to 13:00 (GMT-4) hours at the following conference:

“AN ANALYSIS OF THE USE OF TECHNOLOGY FOR COLLABORATIVE LEARNING IN COMPUTER LABORATORIES AND IN CLASSROOMS”

Speaker: David Peña. Supervisor Professor: Miguel Nussbaum

To define the effects of different technologies in the classroom is essential for their effective use. This research focuses on comparing the silent collaborative learning in large groups with the help of two different technologies. The first is One Mouse per Child where each student has a mouse and work on a shared screen. This is an economical alternative for low-income communities, needing a single computer every forty students. The second takes place in a computer lab where each student has their own computer. The study was done with two different classes of sixth grade students, each experimental group used a different technology for solving the same activities. These consisted of a classification matrix, where students helped each other sending suggestions (the curriculum for Language and Communication was evaluated). Silent collaboration was evaluated thanks to the records that the programs kept. A usability study was conducted, for this observers recorded the behaviors of students. Learning was measured by traditional tests designed by teachers. From the results it was concluded that, silent collaboration in the laboratory is more effective than in the classroom. In the same line the usability parameters also scored higher in the laboratory. Finally it was concluded that learning is achieved in both cases and there is no significant differences between technologies.

“POLYNOMIAL REFORMULATION OF PLANNING PROBLEMS WITH TEMPORARY OBJECTIVES”

Speaker: Jorge Torres Villarrubia. Supervisor Professor: Jorge Baier

Classical Planning is a problem studied in Artificial Intelligence which consists of finding a plan that leads an agent from a given initial state to a goal state defined by a given property. Many compelling applications require finding plans whose execution, rather than just its final state, satisfies a certain given property. Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) is a language that allows a natural specification for such properties. An effective approach to planning with LTL goals reformulates a given a planning problem with an LTL goal into a classical planning problem. This allows the use of off-the-shelf classical planners for temporal planning. The key enabler of such a reformulation is the fact that for every LTL formula it is possible to build a non-deterministic finite-state automaton to check for its satisfiability. Unfortunately the size of the automaton is worst-case exponential on the size of the formula which means that the size of the reformulated problem may blow up exponentially with respect to the size of the original problem. The objective of this work is to propose a worst-case polynomial reformulation algorithm. Our approach exploits a different type of automata: Alternating Automata (AA). It is known that for every LTL formula there exists a corresponding linear-size AA. We propose a number of approaches to utilize these AA in a reformulation algorithm. We prove the length of plans for these reformulated problems can grow by a factor proportional to the length of the goal formula. Our preliminary experimental evaluation has shown that certain ways of reformulating the problem are more effective for specific planners.
