John P. A. Ioannidis Explores the Replication Crisis: Livestream Seminar

Hello everyone,

In 2023, Statistical Horizons launched its Distinguished Speaker Series, a series of 3-hour virtual seminars taught by some of the most prominent and innovative scholars in the field. On Monday, August 11th, Professor John P. A. Ioannidis will present Reproducible and Useful Research: The Replication Crisis and Solutions.

This course will examine the reproducibility and practical utility of scientific research. Professor Ioannidis will explore the roots of the replication crisis, including how study design, reporting practices, and peer review contribute to irreproducibility and wasted research efforts. The seminar will critically evaluate proposed solutions—from theoretical reforms to tested interventions—and consider their potential benefits and unintended consequences.
Ioannidis is Professor of Medicine, of Epidemiology and Population Health, and (by courtesy) of Biomedical Data Science at Stanford University. He has received numerous honors, including honorary doctorates from six universities and election to the U.S. National Academy of Medicine. He is among the world’s most cited scientists, with over 620,000 citations and a current rate of more than 6,000 new citations per month.

This livestream seminar will be held via Zoom from 1pm-4pm ET, but you can also join asynchronously by viewing the recorded video

Please share this information with anyone who may be interested. Email kaity@statisticalhorizons.com with any questions.

Thanks,
Kaity

IEEE NorCAS Special Sessions and more…

TUNI Luottamuksellinen – Confidential (3Y)

Dear colleagues,
The 2025 IEEE Nordic Circuits and Systems Conference (NorCAS) will be held in
Riga, Latvia on October 28-29, 2025. NorCAS is financially co-sponsored by IEEE CAS Society.
The paper submission is open at https://www.conftool.pro/norcas2025.
In addition to the regular tracks of analog, digital and SoC circuits and systems,
we will have the following special sessions in IEEE NorCAS 2025:
Efficient ways to develop Rust firmware
Organizers:
    Wolfgang Ecker, Infineon Technologies/TUM, Germany
    Henri Lunnikivi, TAU, Finland
    Per Lindgren, LTU, Sweden
Rust is gaining significance in the industry due to its memory safety, performance, and concurrency capabilities, making it a strong contender for traditional embedded development languages like C and C++. As memory safety requires a special way of writing software, Rust is sometimes framed as being inefficient to use. This session addresses aspects of using Rust efficiently in firmware programming without restricting the methods and approaches to how this can be achieved.
Chips Act initiatives in the move
Organizer:
    Jari Nurmi, TAU, Finland
There are a number of initiatives in Europe both on national and EU levels to ramp up the European competences in microelectronics design and manufacturing. This session welcomes both bird’s view papers on how the initiatives are addressing competence and capacity gaps identified, and bottom-up papers showcasing results from research groups and companies taking action on recreating competences in design and implementation of microelectronic chips.
AI in Circuits and Systems
Organizers:
Hannu Tenhunen, University of Turku, Finland
Jouni Isoaho, University of Turku, Finland
    Jari Nurmi, TAU, Finland
This special session addresses the use of Artificial Intelligence from two sides: How AI is used for facilitating the design of microelectronics circuits and systems, and on the other hand, how AI is incorporated in resource-constrained systems such as Internet-of-Things, wearables or Edge computing devices.
Wireless communications circuits
Organizers:
    Dmitrijs Pikulins, RTU, Latvia
    Peeter Ellervee, Taltech, Estonia
    Jari Nurmi, TAU, Finland
The variety in wireless communication circuits and systems keeps extending. At one end there are backscattering devices and ultra low power IoT communication circuits, at the other end sophisticated 5G and 6G technologies with new waveforms and modulations used in massive-MIMO-enabled communication networks with high capacity, throughput, low latency or ultra reliability requirements. New frequency bands for terrestrial and satellite communications are explored, and at the same time lower frequencies are finding new applications when abandoned from traditional broadcast use. This special session welcomes submissions throughout the spectrum of communication circuit design, both in analog and digital domains.
All the special session papers will be reviewed similarly to the regular track papers and will be sent to IEEE Xplore for inclusion in their database. For further information on the conference, see https://events.tuni.fi/norcas/

Looking forward to seeing you in Riga in October!
