Special Issue on AI for Sustainability

We are at the cusp of two massive historic trends intimately intermingled. On the one hand, our technological revolutions have increased our standards of living quality, including a longer lifespan and larger wealth. On the other hand, we are amid sustainability threats, including climate change and loss of biodiversity. The way our generation responds to the latter challenge using our considerable accumulated level of understanding will have a significant impact in generations to come.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) for sustainability has emerged as a powerful tool with substantial groundbreaking advances. It has opened countless avenues to improve the understanding of the underlying problems while supporting effective sound solutions. However, to take full advantage of the available science and technology, we need to increase their visibility to stimulate its widespread adoption. AI refers to the development of machine capabilities such as learning, reasoning, knowledge representation, planning, perception, problem-solving, and pattern recognition.  Due to the potential for broad impact of these capabilities, it is imperative to support sustainability efforts to extend their adoption and promote awareness about their potential. In particular, we call for participation through articles addressing issues along the following lines: a) Applications of AI  tackling climate change,  addressing biodiversity loss, and considering human vulnerability; b) research describing the construction,  implementation, evaluation, and how-to-do capabilities supporting sustainability; and c) making sure AI leaves a small impact as possible on sustainability.

The purpose of this Special Issue is to provide a forum for the researchers and practitioners related to the rapidly developing field of AI for sustainability to share their novel and original research on the topic. Therefore, we encourage the submission of the practitioners’ latest unpublished work on AI for sustainability. Of our particular interest are the developments from research groups in Latin America and elsewhere. The areas of interest include both theory and applications of AI on the following topics (they are not limited to):

  • Wild animal and plants identification and monitoring.
  • Electric systems. Usage forecast, greenhouse gases leaking, models with small datasets
  • Efficient transportation models, smart shipping routing, optimal bike-sharing distribution
  • Buildings and cities. Cooling and heating control, lighting adaptation, vehicular traffic analysis
  • Food waste, cement and ammonia reduction,
  • Farms and forests. Gases, agriculture, pipelines leaking, carbon, deforestation remote sensing
  • Carbon dioxide removal. Identification and monitoring of placement sites.
  • Weather prediction. Improved weather prediction models, long-term and reliable climate monitoring, ocean reflectivity, and warming monitoring.
  • Social impacts. Adaptation, interaction with the environment.
  • Carbon offset pricing, sustainability risk assessment, biodiversity, and climate change impacts.

Scope
========
This workshop aims to present the latest results on the theory and practice of learning and algorithmic techniques for robotic perception and mapping. A series of contributed and invited talks by academic leaders and renowned researchers will discuss ground-breaking perception and mapping methods based on optimization and filtering, learning and data-driven models, uncertainty-aware and certifiable perception, multi-agent and distributed mapping, semantic representation, and mesh-based compression. The workshop will also discuss the current challenges and research directions in the next 5-10 years, and will include posters and spotlight talks to facilitate interaction between the speakers and the audience. The workshop plans to have a hybrid format with in-person speakers/attendees and a live broadcast to convey the message to a broader audience. Talk recordings and accepted contributions will be published on the workshop's webpage to broaden the research impact.

We cordially invite researchers to submit short papers, extended abstracts, posters, and/or videos. We accept original papers, as well as in-review or accepted manuscripts. Submitted contributions can describe work in progress, preliminary results, novel concepts, or industrial applications. All manuscripts are limited to 4+n pages (i.e., additional pages over 4 are ONLY allowed for references), should use the IEEE standard two-column conference format (paper template available on the IEEE ICRA 2022 website), and must be in the PDF format with size less than 20 MB. We encourage authors to submit a video for their manuscript as supplementary material. All video submissions must have the mp4 format with a size less than 100 MB. All original submissions will be peer-reviewed. Authors who submit a paper are expected to provide (up to) 3 single-blind reviews for the papers submitted to this workshop. Submissions will be selected by workshop organizers based on the reviews, their originality, relevance to the workshop topics, contributions, technical clarity, and presentation. All accepted manuscripts will be presented as posters during the workshop, which will be displayed throughout the day. Two top contributions will be selected for 10-minute oral presentations at spotlight sessions. Accepted posters and videos will be posted on the workshop website.

*AIM AND SCOPE* 


We are approaching a future where social robots will progressively become widespread in many aspects of our daily lives, including education, healthcare, work, and personal use. All such practical applications require that humans and robots collaborate in human environments, where social interaction is unavoidable. Along with verbal communication, successful social interaction is closely coupled with nonverbal communication. Humans perform nonverbal communication in an instinctive and adaptive way, with no effort. For robots to be successful in our social landscape, they should therefore engage in social interactions in a human-like manner, with increasing levels of autonomy. Understanding human-human interaction is therefore the most natural guide to designing human-robot interaction interfaces that can be usable and understandable by everyone. The key aim of this special session is to bring forth efforts to understand mechanisms underlying human-human nonverbal communication and introduce novel approaches to the design, development, and evaluation of robotic platforms inspired and driven by those mechanisms. This special session will bring together researchers with diverse backgrounds, ranging from social psychology, cognitive science, machine learning, computer vision, and human-robot interaction, to share innovative ideas, findings, and challenges related to nonverbal communication skills in humans and robots. The special session will foster multidisciplinary discussions among academic and industrial researchers towards improving robots’ nonverbal communication skills and enhancing human trust and acceptance of robots.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: 

– Analysis and synthesis of multimodal nonverbal cues, including facial expressions, paralinguistics, eye gaze, head movements, body postures, and hand gestures within an interaction context. 

– Analysis and synthesis of affective states, such as emotions, empathy, personality, and engagement. 

– Co-modelling of nonverbal and verbal cues. 

– Co-speech gesture generation. 

– Machine learning approaches to nonverbal communication analysis and synthesis. 

– Societal and ethical considerations of cognitive and social robots, including transparency, bias, fairness, and privacy. 

– Applications of cognitive and social robots in healthcare, education, workplace, or entertainment. 

– Databases and tools for nonverbal communication analysis and synthesis.
