About the Special Issue

Intelligent devices, such as smart wearables, intelligent vehicles, virtual assistants, and robots, are progressively becoming widespread in many aspects of our daily lives, where effective interaction is increasingly desirable. In such applications, the more information exchanged between the user and the system through multiple modalities, the more versatile, efficient, and natural the interaction becomes. Currently, modern intelligent devices do not consider the user state sufficiently into consideration and thus suffer from lack of personalization and low engagement. Interaction logs and verbal data alone are not adequate for genuinely interpreting human behaviours, and therefore there has been a significant effort to analyse human behaviours from video data. Although significant progress has been made so far, there is still much room for improvement in moving from controlled and acted settings to real-world settings. The key aim of this Special Issue is to bring together cutting-edge research and innovative computer vision techniques applied to human behaviour analysis, from the recognition of gestures and activities to the interpretation of these cues at a higher level for predicting cognitive, social, and emotional states. Special issue topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Unsupervised, semi-supervised and supervised learning-based approaches to human behaviour analysis;
  • Face, gesture, and body analysis;
  • Activity recognition and anticipation;
  • Affect and emotion recognition;
  • Interactive behaviour analysis, including multiparty interaction, human-computer interaction, human-robot interaction;
  • Multimodal behaviour analysis, combining vision with other modalities (e.g., audio, vital signs);
  • Societal and ethical considerations of human behaviour analysis, including explainability, bias, fairness, privacy;
  • Real-time systems for human behaviour analysis on devices with limited on-board computational power;
  • Databases and open-source tools for human behaviour analysis;
  • Applications in education, healthcare, smart environments, autonomous driving, or any related field.

SCOPE: 

The 1st International Challenge on Federated Learning focuses on training computational models across healthcare data silos without ever sharing any patient data. Specifically, the FeTS 2021 challenge has two tasks: 

1.       Task 1 (Federated Training): Evaluate aggregation methods for the creation of a consensus tumor segmentation model, given a pre-defined segmentation algorithm for training. 

2.       Task 2 (Federated Evaluation): Evaluate the generalizability of tumor segmentation algorithms “in the wild”, i.e., on unseen datasets from partner sites of the FeTS initiative (https://www.fets.ai).

21 May 2021: Release of training data, example code, and comprehensive instructions 

14 June 2021: Release of validation data 

19 July 2021: Submission of short papers, reporting proposed method & preliminary results

The S3E track emphasizes the issues relevant to developing and
maintaining software systems that behave reliably, efficiently and
effectively. This track investigates both established traditional
approaches and modern emerging approaches to large software production
and evolution.

For decades, it is still an open question in software industry, how to
provide fast and effective software process and software services, and
how to come to the software systems, embedded systems, autonomous
systems, or cyber-physical systems that will address the open issue of
supporting information management process in many, particularly complex
organization systems. Even more, it is a hot issue how to provide a
synergy between systems in common and software services as mandatory
component of each modern organization, particularly in terms of IoT, Big
Data, and Industry 4.0 paradigms.

In recent years, we are the witnesses of great movements in the area of
software, system and service engineering (S3E). Such movements are both
of technological and methodological nature. By this, today we have a
huge selection of various technologies, tools, and methods in S3E as a
discipline that helps in a support of the whole information life cycle
in organization systems. Despite that, one of the hot issues in practice
is still how to effectively develop and maintain complex systems from
various aspects, particularly when software components are crucial for
addressing declared system goals, and their successful operation. It
seems that nowadays we have great theoretical potentials for application
of new and more effective approaches in S3E. However, it is more likely
that real deployment of such approaches in industry practice is far
behind their theoretical potentials.
The main goal of Track 5 is to address open questions and real
potentials for various applications of modern approaches and
technologies in S3E so as to develop and implement effective software
services in a support of information management and system engineering.
We intend to address interdisciplinary character of a set of theories,
methodologies, processes, architectures, and technologies in disciplines
such as: Software Engineering Methods, Techniques, and Technologies,
Cyber-Physical Systems, Lean and Agile Software Development, Design of
Multimedia and Interaction Systems, Model Driven Approaches in System
Development, Development of Effective Software Services and Intelligent
Systems, as well as applications in various problem domains. We invite
researchers from all over the world who will present their
contributions, interdisciplinary approaches or case studies related to
modern approaches in S3E. We express an interest in gathering scientists
and practitioners interested in applying these disciplines in industry
sector, as well as public and government sectors, such as healthcare,
education, or security services. Experts from all sectors are welcomed.
