JPEG AI Learning-based Image Coding Challenge solicits technical contributions that demonstrate efficient coding of image content based on machine learning approach. This means image coding solutions for which learning-based modules (end-to-end trained) play an important role, considering the overall codec architecture. Some examples are non-linear data correlation transformations, learned probability models for entropy coding, hierarchical learning-based coding structures and perceptual optimizations. 
The Challenge is designed to be in sync with a JPEG AI Call for Evidence (CfE) on Learning-based Image Coding (https://jpeg.org/items/20200224_cfe_peg_ai.html) and will use the same content, evaluation methodologies and deadlines. The objective of the above CfE is to objectively and subjectively evaluate relevant learning-based image coding solutions to validate the potential performance of this novel coding approach, especially in terms of compression efficiency.
Participants are required to submit the following materials:
* A detailed description of the coding algorithm in the form of an MMSP challenge paper and/or technical report to JPEG as well as methodologies and data used for training.
* A decoder implementation in a form that allows stand-alone inference/testing on a standard computer (CPU only) in a reasonable amount of time, preferably in source code form.
* Compressed codestreams and corresponding decoded images.
Timeline
30th May: Proposal registration.
12th June: Submission of code-streams, decoded images, MMSP challenge paper and/or JPEG technical document.
14th June: Release of the test dataset for proponents to code.
18th June: Submission of code-streams and decoded images for the test dataset.
21st June: MMSP Challenge paper and/or JPEG technical document submission.
15th July: MMSP Challenge paper notification.
30th July: MMSP Challenge camera ready paper.
1st September: 1st Stage: Objective evaluation of all the proposals; 2nd Stage: Subjective evaluation.
15th September: End of subjective evaluation; all results will be released online.
21-23rd September: Challenge session at MMSP 2020 with presentations and announcement of award recipients.
89th JPEG Meeting: Presentation and discussion of the proposals at the JPEG meeting (planned for 10-16 October)
The MMSP Challenge paper submissions will be peer reviewed in a similar way as any other regular MMSP paper submissions and, if accepted, will be included in the IEEExplore.
Based on the experimental results obtained and the review of the significance, novelty and impact of the submitted image coding solutions, two awards will be discerned:
* Best performing image coding solution.
* Most innovative image coding solution.

OVERVIEW:

This workshop brings together researchers from robotics, computer vision, and machine learning to examine challenges and opportunities emerging at the boundary between spatial perception and high-level task execution. Recent years have seen a growing interest towards metric-semantic understanding, which consists in building a semantically annotated (or object-oriented) model of the environment. On the other hand, researchers have been looking at high-level task execution using modern tools from reinforcement learning and traditional decision-making. The combination of these research efforts in spatial perception and task execution has the potential to enable applications such as visual question-answering, object search and retrieval, and provides a more intuitive interaction with the user. This workshop creates an exchange opportunity to connect researchers working in metric-semantic perception and task execution. In particular, the workshop will bring forward the latest breakthroughs and cutting-edge research in the two research areas. Besides the usual mix of invited talks and poster presentations, the workshop involves two interactive activities. First, we will provide a hands-on tutorial on a state-of-the-art library for metric-semantic reconstruction (Kimera). Second, we will organize the GOSEEK challenge (details below), in conjunction with the release of a photo-realistic Unity-based simulator, where participants will need to combine perception and decision-making to find objects in a complex indoor environment.

The workshop will include keynote presentations from established researchers in robotics, machine learning, computer vision, robot perception.

– There will be two spotlight talks and two poster sessions highlighting contributed papers throughout the day.

– The winner of the challenge will give an invited keynote presentation  (and take home a monetary prize).

 

The workshop is endorsed by the IEEE RAS Technical Committee for Computer & Robot Vision.

 

CHALLENGE AND AWARDS:

We are organizing the GOSEEK reinforcement learning challenge. The challenge consists in creating an RL agent that combines advanced perception (provided by Kimera) and high-level decision-making to search for objects placed within complex indoor environments from a Unity-based simulator. Simply put: like PACMAN, but in a realistic scene and with realistic perception capabilities. Several data modalities are provided from both the simulator ground truth and the perception pipeline (e.g., images, depth, agent location) to enable the participants to focus on the RL/search aspects. The contest will be hosted on the EvalAI platform, where participants will submit solutions, via docker containers, for scoring. The winner of the competition will receive a monetary prize ($1000) and will give a keynote presentation at the workshop.

Participants are invited to submit an extended abstract or short papers (up to 4 pages in ICRA format) focusing on novel advances in spatial perception, reinforcement learning, and at the boundary between these research areas.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

– Novel algorithms for spatial perception that combine geometry, semantics, and physics, and allow reasoning over spatial, semantic, and temporal aspects;

– Learning techniques that can produce cognitive representations directly from complex sensory inputs;

– Approaches that combine learning-based techniques with geometric and model-based estimation methods;

– Novel transfer learning and meta-learning methods for reinforcement learning;

– Novel RL approaches that leverage domain knowledge and existing (model-free and model-based) methods for perception and planning; and

– Position papers and unconventional ideas on how to reach human-level performance in robot perception and task-execution. 

Contributed papers will be reviewed by the organizers and a program committee of invited reviewers. Accepted papers will be published on the workshop website and will be featured in spotlight presentations and poster sessions.

Biometrics provides efficient and reliable solutions to recognize individuals.
With increasing number of identity theft and miss-use incidents we do observe
a significant fraud in e-commerce and thus growing interests on trustworthiness
of  authentication applications. Nowadays we find biometric applications in
areas like border control, national ID cards, e-banking, e-commerce, e-health
etc. Large-scale applications such as the European Union SmartBorder Concept,
the Visa Information System (VIS) and Unique Identification (UID) in India
require high accuracy and also reliability, interoperability, scalability
and usability. Many of these are joint requirements also for forensic applications.

Multimodal biometrics combined with fusion techniques can improve recognition
performance. Efficient searching or indexing methods can accelerate identification
efficiency. Additionally, quality of captured biometric samples can strongly
influence the performance. Moreover, mobile biometrics is an emerging area and
biometrics based smartphones can support deployment and acceptance of biometric systems.

However, concerns about security and privacy cannot be neglected. The relevant
techniques in the area of presentation attack detection (liveness detection) and
template protection are about to supplement biometric systems, in order to improve
fake resistance, prevent potential attacks such as cross matching, identity theft etc.

The BIOSIG 2020 conference addresses these issues and will present innovations and
best practices that can be transferred into future applications. The conference is
jointly organized by the Competence Center for Applied Security Technology (CAST),
the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), the European Association
for Biometrics (EAB), the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (JRC),
the TeleTrusT-Association, the Norwegian Biometrics Laboratory (NBL), National
Research Center for Applied Cybersecurity (ATHENE), the Fraunhofer Institute for
Computer Graphics Research IGD, IET Biometrics Journal and the special interest
group BIOSIG of the Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V. (GI). The conference will
be technically co-sponsored by IEEE and papers will be added to IEEE Xplore.

The BIOSIG-Conference is part of the Darmstadt Biometric Week, which will take
place at the premises of Fraunhofer IGD from September 14 to 18, 2020. The
agenda of the week will contain the following events: German Biometric Working
Group meeting, EAB-Research-Project-Conference, EAB-awards, BIOSIG,
EAB-Biometrics-Training-Event.

We invite stakeholders and technical experts to submit original research papers
to BIOSIG. Industrial contributions presenting lessons learnt from practical
usage, case study, recent results of prototypes, are also welcomed.

Paper Submission Instructions:

Submissions should be full papers (max. 8 pages) in English. Each paper will be
subjected of a double blind peer review. Authors should upload their submission at:

Note that those contributions, which will be accepted as poster presentation, will
be limited to 8 pages. Those contributions, which will be accepted as full research
paper, might be extended to 12 pages.

BIOSIG is supporting reproducible research (RR). All contributions are encouraged to:
– present experiments related to publicly available datasets as a first requirement for RR;
– make generated system scores openly available as a second requirement for RR.
Additionally, the sharing of plots or performance figures should align with the international
standard ISO/IEC 19795-1. Moreover open source code of the proposed methods and detailed
instructions to reproduce the experiments is strongly encouraged.

We are seeking a harmonized appearance of the conference proceedings and thus invite
authors to align their manuscripts with the Harmonized Biometric Vocabulary, as published
in the international standard ISO/IEC 2382-37:
