CFP: CVPR 2020 Workshop and Challenge on Learned Image Compression (CLIC)

CLIC: 3rd Workshop and Challenge on Learned Image Compression 2020

MOTIVATION
Our workshop aims to gather publications which will advance the field of image and video compression using state of the art machine learning and computer vision techniques. Even with the long history of signal-processing oriented compression, taking new approaches to image processing have great potential, due to the proliferation of high-resolution cell-phone images and special hardware (e.g., GPUs and mobile AI accelerators). The potential in this area has already been demonstrated using recurrent neural networks, convolutional neural networks, and adversarial learning, many of these matching the best image-compression standards when measured on perceptual metrics. As such, we are interested in the various techniques associated with this class of methods. Broadly speaking, we would like to encourage the development of novel encoder/decoder architectures, novel ways to control information flow between the encoder and the decoder, novel optimization objectives for improved perceptual quality and learn how to quantize (or learn to quantize) better.
CHALLENGE TRACKS

There are two challenge tracks. In the low bit-rate track, images need to be compressed to below 0.15 bits per pixel (bpp). This is the same task as in previous years, which allows us to measure progress over the years. As a first step towards video compression, this year also includes a P-frame track. Here, video P-frames need to be predicted from a previous frame.

Low-rate compression

For the low bit-rate track (which is similar to the one we ran at CLIC 2018), contestants will be asked to compress the entire dataset to 0.15 bpp or smaller. The winners of the competition will be chosen based human perceptual rating task and will be asked to give a short talk at the CLIC workshop. PSNR and MS-SSIM will be evaluated but not considered for prizes. We will provide last year’s professional and mobile datasets (all splits) as the training data for this challenge track. A new test set will be generated for this year and released during the test phase.

P-frame compression

The P-frame challenge will require entrants to compress a video frame conditioned on the previous image frame. Instead of splitting the dataset into training and test sets, in this track the entire dataset is released before the test phase. To discourage overfitting, the model size is added to the compressed dataset size and the sum cannot exceed a target bit-rate. That is, participants should try to minimize both the dataset size and the model size. The winner will be determined based on MS-SSIM.

REGULAR PAPERS

We will have a short (4 pages) regular paper track, which allows participants to share research ideas related to image compression. In addition to the paper, we will host a poster session during which authors will be able to discuss their work in more detail.

We encourage exploratory research which shows promising results in:

● Lossy image compression
● Quantization (learning to quantize; dealing with quantization in optimization)
● Entropy minimization
● Image super-resolution for compression
● Deblurring
● Compression artifact removal
● Inpainting (and compression by inpainting)
● Generative adversarial networks
● Perceptual metrics optimization and their applications to compression
And, in particular, how these topics can improve image compression.

CHALLENGE PAPERS

The challenge task participants are asked to submit a short paper (up to 4 pages) detailing the algorithms which they submitted as part of the challenge.

RoboCup at Work: Competing for the Factory of the Future

RoboCup at Work is a league and competition in RoboCup that targets the use of robots in work-related, industrial scenarios.

It aims to foster research and development that enables the use of innovative mobile robots equipped with advanced manipulators for current and future industrial applications, where robots cooperate with human workers for complex tasks ranging from manufacturing, automation, and parts handling up to general logistics.

The RoboCup at Work league is characterized by an industrial appealing environment composed of industrial objects such as screws and nuts, shelves, containers, platforms of various sizes and networked automation devices such as conveyor belts, drilling machines, and others.

The actual competition tasks to be performed in the environment are defined in a set of so-called tests. Each test addresses various mobile manipulation capabilities such as grasping, transportation, precision placement, and visual servoing.

Participation in the Competition

All teams that intend to participate in the competition have to perform the following steps:

  1. Submission of qualification material, including a Team Description Paper and possibly additional material like videos or drawings

  2. Final registration (qualified teams only)

Qualification

The qualification process serves a dual purpose: It should allow the Technical Committee to assess the safety of the robots a team intends to bring to a competition, and it should allow to rank teams according to a set of evaluation criteria in order to select the most promising teams for a competition, if not all interested teams can be permitted. The TC will select the qualified teams according to the qualification material provided by the teams.

The evaluation criteria will include:

  • Team description paper
  • Relevant scientific contribution/publications
  • The professional quality of robot and software
  • Novelty of approach
  • Relevance to industry
  • Performance in previous competitions
  • Contribution to RoboCup at Work league, e.g. by
    — Organization of events
    — Provision and sharing of knowledge
  • Team web site

Team Description Paper

The Team Description Paper (TDP) is a central element of the qualification process and has to be provided by each team as part of the qualification process. The TDP should at least contain the following information in the author/title section of the paper:

  • Name of the team (title)
  • Team members (authors), including the team leader
  • Link to the team web site
  • Contact information
  • The body of the TDP should contain information on the following:
    — focus of research/research interest
    — a description of the hardware, including an image of the robot(s)
    — a description of the software, esp. the functional and software architectures
    — innovative technology (if any)
    — reusability of the system or parts thereof
    — applicability and relevance to industrial tasks
    — usage of components (software or hardware) developed by other RoboCup at Work teams

The team description paper should cover in detail the technical and scientific approach, while the team web site should be designed for a broader audience. Both the web site and the TDP have to be written in English.

Late-Breaking Posters at the London Imaging Meeting: Future Colour Imaging Conference

We have kept free slots on the second day (of this 2-day conference) for the community to present new “work in progress” posters. All topics relevant to the conference are solicited and we particularly encourage students to submit. The posters are not archival publications but poster abstracts that will appear in a printed booklet at the LIM meeting. Abstracts may be created in a software program of your choice and submitted as a PDF. Authors are free to submit fuller versions of their work to future conferences and journals.
