Scope and Motivation:

The involvement of Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) in the field of Internet-of-Things (IoT) and Industrial IoT (IIoT) applications has become a new hotspot for the researchers and industries. The Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) is an emerging technology that has proven to have great potential in communications, such as signal classification, channel estimation, and performance optimization. However, in the current era of 5G and Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), cooperative and heterogeneous communication scenarios are developing in a complex and large-scale trend for all the smart applications, especially for IIoTs. These technologies play a vital role in routing establishment, network resource optimization and energy-efficient computing, which are mainly operating in Network and Transport upper layer of OSI model. The power allocation and resource management in these networks remain a challenge due to the miniature size, limited battery life and dynamic movement of the sensor nodes in the Industrial applications. Therefore, for efficient power management and necessary optimization for IIoT applications, AI, Deep Learning (DL) and other Neural Network (NN) based approaches will come up as a solution for green communication. These technologies can be used in MEC paradigm for IIoT applications due to is merits of real-time response, resource capacity as well as low processing power.

For the 5G system specifications (MEC ISG) and 3GPP ecosystem draws attention towards the edge computing enablers. These MEC systems provide opportunities of the ETSI Multi-access Edge Computing group. Recently, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) have also expressed that the MEC services and resource management can be offered by both mobile network operators as well as third party vendors. Thus, the scope of these paradigms is growing exponentially towards the design, deployment, maintenance and security of MEC for Industry 4.0 applications.

This special issue will focus on Intelligent Resource management in MEC with the theory and practical aspects of recent outcomes and developments in MEC IIoT applications. The issue invites the researchers and industry practitioners to submit high quality unpublished technical articles, highlighting the scopes and challenges for resource allocation in MEC IIoT applications.

Automated vehicles are expected to have a significant impact in the transport sector in the next decades, improving road safety and traffic efficiency, as well as reducing energy consumption and improving user comfort. Automated vehicles make use of a set of onboard sensors installed in the vehicle (e.g. camera, radar and lidar) that are responsible for perceiving the surrounding environment, and a set of actuators that control its longitudinal and lateral movements. One of the development objectives is to automatically perform driving tasks with less or even without driver intervention. Several studies have already shown that the sensors used in the perception process have limitations that might degrade the performance of automated vehicles. For example, in adverse weather conditions (such as rain, snow and fog), the cameras will not be able to adequately capture the environment, and in situations where the sensor’s field of vision is blocked (by other vehicles or buildin!
 gs) none of the current sensors can detect beyond the position of the obstacle. To overcome these limitations and improve the perception capabilities of the vehicles, cooperative perception enables the wireless exchange of sensor information between vehicles and between vehicles and infrastructure nodes. Cooperative perception, also known as cooperative sensing or collective perception, enables vehicles and infrastructure nodes to detect objects (e.g.
non-connected vehicles, pedestrians, obstacles) beyond their local sensing capabilities. Cooperative perception can be key for extended and timely detection of the surrounding environment and can also enable cooperative applications by compensating low penetration rates of connected road users, thus facilitating the future deployment of automated vehicles.

The purpose of this Special Issue is to present and discuss major research challenges, latest developments, and recent advances on cooperative perception. This Special Issue solicits the submission of high-quality papers from academia and industry that aim to solve open technical problems or challenges in the context of cooperative perception. Original and innovative contributions on all aspects, both theoretical and experimental, are all welcome.

Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as
accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website.

Image Communication journal, Special Issue on Computational Image Editing

Call for Papers: Computational Image Editing

In the past decade, smartphones and social media applications have revolutionized our relationship to images. From Instagram to Facebook, photographs are now ubiquitous and users demands have moved from simple image storage, posting and tagging to more advanced image editing. Image editing can also be referred to image manipulation and encompasses the processes of altering images to modify their visual content or quality. There are a lot of possible ways to visually modify images with computational techniques, e.g., noise reduction, removal of unwanted objects, sharpening, compositing, matting, to quote a few.
Some of these computational image editing techniques are now in the hands of consumers with applications such as Instagram or Snapseed. But while smartphones are a very visible driver of this advent of computational image editing techniques, this has been possible only with the huge developments of the techniques that have supported this revolution, from the display of high dynamic range images to the wide range of filters provided by Instagram.
Even with these recent advances, computational image editing is still one of the toughest problems of the imaging industry. Hence, professional photography editing is a long and laborious process that is highly dependent of the professional photographer skills that can spends hours to produce subjective and qualitative enhancements. It is easy to understand that if it normally takes many hours to perform a professional editing of a picture, doing it faster and automatically at a larger scale is difficult and challenging. On the other hand, recent advances have put to the forefront deep learning  based computational image editing for artistic style transfer, automatic colorization, and inpainting with very impressive results. With the help of hardware acceleration, these computationally intensive applications begin to be feasible on mobile devices.
