Machine learning techniques are becoming increasingly popular in the
field of networking. It offers promising solutions for network
optimization, security, and management. However, the lack of
transparency and interpretability in machine learning models poses
challenges for understanding and trusting their decisions in critical
networking scenarios. Moreover, ensuring safety and reliability is of
utmost importance when deploying machine learning in real-world network
environments.

Control and decision-making algorithms are critical for the operation of
networks, hence we believe that the solutions should be safety bounded
and interpretable. Understanding the decisions and behaviors of machine
learning models is crucial for optimizing network performance, enhancing
security, and ensuring reliable network operations. This is a very
crucial topic which needs to be addressed, as network operators,
managers or administrators are reluctant to use ML in production
networks because of their critical and sensitive nature, e.g., as
outages and performance degradations can be very costly.

We invite original research contributions as well as position papers
addressing, but not limited to, the following topics:

– Explainable machine learning models for network performance
optimization
– Interpretable anomaly detection and intrusion detection in networking
systems
– Safety considerations and techniques for robust and reliable machine
learning in networking
– Fairness, accountability, and transparency in machine learning for
networking
– Hybrid models which combine formal methods and AI for explainability
– Explainable reinforcement learning for networking
– Explainable deep reinforcement learning for networking
– Safety bounded reinforcement learning for networking
– Explainable Graph neural networks for networking
– Explainable sequential decision-making
– Constraints-based explanations for networking
– Visualizations and tools for understanding and interpreting machine
learning models in networking
– Case studies and real-world applications of explainable and safety
bounded machine learning in networking
– Evaluation methods for explainable machine learning
– Fidelity of explainable machine learning methods

IEEE R9 LMAG – Webinar “Climate Change”

David Bondurant (03/AUG/2023)

I have observed deceptive marketing statements by the media, politicians, and environmental movement since 1970, leading me to question “The Science”.  The techniques of Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt (FUD) and Lying with Statistics are used daily in the press. The 2021 Book, “Unsettled” by Steven E. Koonin, a former Under Secretary of Science at the Department of Energy during the Obama administration, provides a significantly more detailed review of Climate Science and recommendations by this field expert.  In this talk, I summarize the book along with extensive data graphs extracted by the author from UN IPPCC and National Climate Assessment reports.

Disertante: David Bondurant

Now a retired Professional Engineer, David Bondurant has been involved with the computer and semiconductor industry for 50 years.  He was a computer architect at Control Data, Sperry-Univac, and Honeywell. He was involved with the government-sponsored advanced semiconductor program called VHSIC (Very High-Speed Integrated Circuits) at Univac & Honeywell where he developed microprocessor and ASIC semiconductor products in bipolar CML, CMOS, and radiation hard CMOS.  He was involved with emerging non-volatile RAM marketing at industry-leading companies.

===========
Introduction

As an interdisciplinary area, Data Science draws scientific inquiry from a broad range of subject areas such as statistics, mathematics, computer science, machine learning, optimization, signal processing, information retrieval, databases, cloud computing, computer vision, natural language processing and etc. Data Science is on the essence of deriving valuable insights from data. It is emerging to meet the challenges of processing very large datasets, i.e. Big Data, with the explosion of new data continuously generated from various channels such as smart devices, web, mobile and social media.

Data systems are posing many challenges in exploiting parallelism of current and upcoming computer architectures. Data volumes of applications in the fields of sciences and engineering, finance, media, online information resources, etc. are expected to double every two years over the next decade and further. With this continuing data explosion, it is necessary to store and process data efficiently by utilizing enormous computing power. The importance of data intensive systems has been raised and will continue to be the foremost fields of research. This raise brings up many research issues, in forms of capturing and accessing data effectively and fast, processing it while still achieving high performance and high throughput, and storing it efficiently for future use. Innovative programming models, high performance scalable computing platforms, efficient storage systems and expression of data requirements are at immediate need. DSS (Data Science and Systems) was created to provide a prime international forum for researchers, industry practitioners and domain experts to exchange the latest advances in Data Science and Data Systems as well as their synergy.
