MDPI Journal of Applied Sciences, special issue on “Advanced Image Analysis and Processing for Biomedical Applications”

Medical images contain plenty of information about the anatomical
structures that are important for a valid diagnosis, and then can be
helpful to doctors for determining the most adequate treatment. The
analysis and processing of biomedical images is an interdisciplinary and
dynamic area of specialization, covering biology, physics, medicine,
engineering, and computer science. The main objective is the application
of image processing and analysis techniques to biological or medical
problems. For instance, in biomedicine, it is possible to use
computational methods of image processing and analysis to model and
visualize human organs from medical images. These methods can have
different objectives, such as enhanced visualization, 3D reconstruction,
segmentation, motion and deformation analysis, and registration.

This Special Issue on Advanced Image Analysis and Processing for
Biomedical Applications aims to provide an assorted and complementary
collection of contributions showing new advancements and applications of
advanced imaging analysis and processing in the biomedical imaging area.
The ultimate objective is to promote research and advancement in the
field, by publishing high-quality research articles and reviews in this
rapidly growing interdisciplinary field.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
– Image enhancement, segmentation, registration, and fusion for
biomedical applications;
– Image acquisition and processing for biomedical applications;
– Reconstruction, motion, and deformation analysis for biomedical
applications;
– Computer-aided diagnosis, surgery, therapy, treatment, and

– Application of machine learning and artificial intelligence in medicine;

– Mobile applications and low-cost systems;
– Sparse representation and dictionary learning-based methods for
medical image processing and understanding;

Sushmita Mitra is a full professor at the Machine Intelligence Unit (MIU), Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. From 1992 to 1994 she was in the RWTH, Aachen, Germany as a DAAD Fellow. She was a Visiting Professor in the Computer Science Departments of the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada; Meiji University, Japan; and Aalborg University Esbjerg, Denmark. Dr. Mitra received the National Talent Search Scholarship (1978-1983) from NCERT, India, the University Gold Medal in 1988, the IEEE TNN Outstanding Paper Award in 1994 for her pioneering work in neuro-fuzzy computing, the CIMPA-INRIA-UNESCO Fellowship in 1996, and Fulbright-Nehru Senior Research Fellowship in 2018-2020. She was the INAE Chair Professor during 2018-2020.

The prime objective of the book is to explore the current areas of
research and development, and challenges to be faced in different areas,
as related to making cities smart. We are particularly interested in,
real-world-grounded, solutions facilitated from the technology and
computing perspectives. However, we are also open to, technology
oriented, considerations related to the social aspects of development of
smart cities of the future.

It can be easily observed that (i) Internet of things (IoT),(ii) cloud,
fog/edge computing,(iii) data science-based solutions,(iv) 5G and other
networking technologies,(v) distributed ledger/blockchain & security, as
well as (vi) artificial intelligence & machine learning, are the key
technologies for smart cities. All of them are parts of integrated
approaches and they have been used to deliver smart city applications
like: intelligent traffic monitoring, innovative solutions for city
monitoring (including video surveillance), smart homes and office
buildings, smart parking, etc. In addition, smart transportation, smart
energy solutions, disaster management, and smart healthcare have been
identified as some of the key requirements for future cities to be seen
as smart.

Numbers of unique sustainable solutions have been proposed by
researchers working in the area of data science, to fulfill the dream of
the smart city. However, up to now, proposed approaches are, much too
often, just academic ideas, published in journals and conference
proceedings. A lot more work is needed to be able to make these ideas a
reality. This is also why we propose this book as a way to bring
together ideas and possible ways of realizing them.

Moreover, smart cities cannot be created without the involvement of all
the stakeholders of the city, namely, local community, government, NGOs,
academia and industry. They have to understand technology and on the
basis of such understanding, jointly, formulate reasonable plans for
“smartifying” their city. Note also that each city may have different
hierarchy of needs that should be addressed. This is why we invite also
reflection on how to involve all the city’s stakeholders to jointly work
to make their city smart for the citizens.

We are inviting chapters addressing topics from any of the six major
areas. Contributions in the form of research articles, reviews,
taxonomies, lists of solved and unsolved problems, findings of special
interest in the context of smart city technologies, and social aspects
of their realization.

We are pleased to inform you that ICARSC 2021 – IEEE International Conference on Autonomous Robot Systems and Competitions will be held at Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal, on April 28-29, 2021.

The conference is co-located with ROBOTICA 2021 – The Portuguese Robotics Open, a RoboCup-sponsored local event, and is promoted by the University of Aveiro, University of Coimbra, Polytechnic Institute of Tomar and the Portuguese Robotics Society.

The conference is planned to take place in a hybrid mode, allowing remote participation along with physical presence.

UPDATE: Due to the COVID19 pandemic, the conference will take place only in virtual modality.

ICARSC gathers participants from academia and industry working in the field of autonomous robotics and related areas. ICARSC is a well established IEEE conference that has been growing continuously for over a decade and is nowadays a truly international forum attracting worldwide quality research papers.

A selection of the presented papers will be invited to propose extended versions for a special issue of the Journal of Intelligent & Robotic Systems (https://www.springer.com/journal/10846).

Besides the conference best paper award, there will also be a best paper award promoted by the Industrial Robot Journal that can be further extended for publication in the journal.
