IEEE CASE 2021 Call of Paper Special Session Scanning Electron Microscopy Images

IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering (CASE case2021.org) is the flagship automation conference of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society and constitutes the primary forum for cross-industry and multidisciplinary research in automation. Its goal is to provide a broad coverage and dissemination of foundational research in automation among researchers, academics, and practitioners. IEEE CASE 2021 will be held in Lyon, France, on August 23-27, 2021.

Analysis of microscopy images for defect detection and structure recognition: from the acquisition to a high-level interpretation

Goal of the Special Session: For the improvement of the reliability of electronic devices, failure analysis has a fundamental role and must take its right place in industry 4.0, with the help of artificial intelligence. Failure analysis tools can most of the time be considered microscopes including sensors. So, they will all then benefit from progresses made in the work carried out to eliminate electronic noise from the acquired signal as well as machine learning processing. Machine learning for images and data will also enhance the quality of acquired data and their exploitation. Furthermore, these data driven approaches will achieve increasingly accurate results for failure analysis tasks as they already do across various application domains like object detection, anomaly detection or image segmentation.

For this special session, our major focus will concern image data from different imaging sources often used for failure analysis. This includes (for example) light optical microscopy, X-ray tomography/microscopy, scanning acoustic microscopy or scanning electron microscopy and novel concepts for automated sample-navigation using dedicated focused ion beam (FIB) and precise laser milling tools. Works can deal with the whole framework concerning images, from the acquisition to a high-level semantic analysis, as noise modeling in electronic sensors can help to make appropriate processing of the data. We are also interested by fundamental approaches that are promising to be applied on this kind of data.

 

Hereafter, a non-exhaustive list of topics:

·       noise modeling in sensors,

·       denoising methods based in inverse problem or deep learning-based approaches,

·       simulation of signals and images for the training of a convolutional neural network for denoising and detection,

·       automated pattern recognition of marks or auto-alignment of the ROI,

·       end-point-detection for Box-Milling applications for cross-sectional analysis using SEM,

·       machine/deep learning methodology for anomaly/default detection and recognition,

·       machine/deep learning methodology for quantification of anomalies/defects by means of image segmentation,

·       domain adaptation for the analysis of data with no annotation or a few annotations,

·

Dates and submission procedure:

February 14, 2021: submission intention with title and short abstract (100 words) to the session chairmen.

March 1st, 2021: Regular & special session paper submission

May 15, 2021: Paper acceptance notification

June 15, 2021: Final paper submission

 

Regular papers can be submitted with a length of 6-8 pages. For the final submission, a manuscript should be of 6 pages, with 2 additional pages allowed but at an extra charge.

 

There is a “Special Session Presentation-Only” option. Only a two-page abstract is required. Accepted submissions will make oral presentations at the conference and be listed in the final program, but will not appear in IEEE Xplore.

SCOPE:
MSc students, PhD students, postdocs, junior/senior academics, and industry practitioners will be typical profiles of the attendants. In fact, the Advanced Course is not a summer school suited only for younger scholars. Rather, a significant proportion of seasoned investigators are regularly present among the attendees, often senior and junior faculty at their own institutions. EarthVision 2021 – Large Scale Computer Vision for Remote Sensing Imagery Workshop
in conjunction with CVPR 2021, June 2021, virtual.

AIMS AND SCOPE
Earth Observation (EO)/Remote Sensing is an ever-growing field of investigation where computer vision, machine learning, and signal/image processing meet. The general objective is to provide large-scale, homogeneous information about processes occurring at the surface of the Earth exploiting data collected by airborne and spaceborne sensors. Earth Observation implies the need for multiple inference tasks, ranging from detection to registration, data mining, multi-sensor, multi-resolution, multi-temporal, and multi-modality fusion, and regression, to name just a few. It comprises ample applications like location-based services, online mapping services, large-scale surveillance, 3D urban modelling, navigation systems, natural hazard forecast and response, climate change monitoring, virtual habitat modelling, etc. The sheer amount of data calls for highly automated scene interpretation workflows.

This workshop, held for its fifth edition at the CVPR 2021, aims at fostering collaboration between the computer vision as well as machine learning disciplines and the remote sensing community to boost automated interpretation of EO data. EarthVision will additionally help build cooperation within the CVPR community for this highly challenging and quickly evolving field that has a big impact on human society, economy, industry, and the planet.

We invite contributions in the fields of (not exhaustive list):
– Super-resolution in the spectral and spatial domain
– Hyperspectral and multispectral image processing
– 3D reconstruction from aerial images
– Feature extraction and learning
– Semantic classification of UAV / aerial and satellite images and videos
– Deep learning tailored for Earth Observation
– Domain adaptation and concept drift
– Human-in-the-loop
– Multi-resolution, multi-temporal, multi-sensor, multi-modal processing
– Public benchmark data sets: Training data standards, testing & evaluation metrics, as well as open source research and development.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
A complete paper should be submitted using the EarthVision templates provided on the workshop website. The paper length must not exceed 8 pages (excluding references) and formatting follows CVPR 2021 instructions. All manuscripts will be subject to a double-blind review process, i.e. authors must not identify themselves on the submitted papers.

Papers are to be submitted using the dedicated submission platform on the Workshop website (https://www.grss-ieee.org/earthvision2021/submission.html). By submitting a manuscript, the authors guarantee that it has not been previously published or accepted for publication in a substantially similar form. CVPR rules regarding plagiarism, double submission, etc. apply.

The international summer school VISMAC “VISione delle MACchine” (in
English, “Machine Vision”) is organized every two years by the
“Associazione Italiana per la ricerca in Computer Vision, Pattern
recognition e machine Learning” (CVPL – ex-GIRPR) affiliated to
International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR). It represents
a stimulating opportunity for doctoral students, young researchers from
universities, research institutions and industry. The primary objective
of the Summer School is to provide a common scientific and cultural
