ICDAR 2021 COMPETITION ON HISTORICAL MAP SEGMENTATION (MAPSEG)

Dear colleagues,
We would like to encourage you to participate in the ICDAR 2021
Competition on Historical Map Segmentation, to be organized in
conjunction with the 16th International Conference on Document Analysis
and Recognition (ICDAR), 5-10 September 2021, Lausanne (Switzerland).

This competition is organized by the LASTIG team of IGN (the French
National Mapping Agency), the R&D Lab. of EPITA (French engineering
school in computer science), and the Center of Historical Studies of
EHESS (French graduate schools of social sciences).

Why should you consider this competition?
– All datasets are released with an open licence as soon as they are
  available (training and validation sets already available).
– Evaluation tools are released early with an open source licence.
– Winners of each task will be invited to co-author the report paper.
– We propose unsolved research problems at the frontiers of computer
  sciences, social sciences and history, with an important potential
  impact in the geographic information systems (GIS) community.

Tasks:
– Task 1: detecting a set of closed shapes (building blocks) in the map
          image.
– Task 2: segmenting the map content from the rest of the sheet.
– Task 3: locating the intersection points of graticule lines
          (historical georeferencing lines).

Schedule:
– Now: training and validation sets available – Training phase started
– March 31, 2021: Registration deadline for competition participants
– April 5 to April 16, 2021: Test phase
– April 23, 2021: Notification of results, Method description deadline
– July 1, 2021: Full dataset release, Full results disclosure.

About this Research Topic 

With the rapid development of new technologies equipped with multiple sensors and AI, it becomes more realistic to have a synchronised integration of multimodal information to better adapt to the user needs. Behavioural modelling based on multimodal sensing has opened a new door to have a more natural perception of the user and create socially intelligent systems that can perceive user’s physical, psychological and cognitive states. Socially intelligent systems can well cater for data-driven personalisation and one particular area that can greatly benefit from such technologies is wellbeing. Wellbeing refers to physical, mental and social wellness and is fundamental to the overall health of an individual and extends beyond the classical definition of health. Recent years have witnessed a surge of assistive technologies that exploit multimodal data to inform users on their wellness-relevant metrics, including, but not limited to heart rate, steps, screen time, and physical activity. However, the number of applications which take advantage of AI and multimodal data to diagnose, prevent and manage wellbeing-related issues, is yet very limited. Such solutions can be in the form of intangible or tangible AI, where the former does not have a physical form and can be communicated through text, sound or images and the latter has a physical form to interact with, like social robots. AI-enabled technology integrated with multimodal information such as voice, speech, facial expression, body posture, gesture, activity, physiology and such can be used to assess wellbeing and provide timely interventions, so can essentially be used to promote wellbeing at different levels (e.g. individual, or societal). Considering multimodal behavioural AI for wellbeing is yet at its early stages, it is important to explore the potential opportunities and its impact as well as the ethical considerations to create socially responsible technologies.

The key aim of this research topic collection is to investigate how multimodal processing of human behavioural data using artificial intelligence can be used to promote wellbeing at individual, interpersonal or societal level, as well as, how the society and current world challenges can influence or inform the approaches and techniques in multimodal behavioural AI for wellbeing.

Special Issue “Human Emotion Recognition”

Robotic systems and computers have become a prominent aspect of our lives, and their presence gives rise to unique technologies. Therefore, human–computer interaction becomes more realistic if computers are capable of recognising the expressions of the human during interaction. Emotion and expression recognition are intuitive yet extremely complicated tasks, as they lay at the base of human–computer interaction, ranging from mobile computing and gaming to health monitoring and robotics. Emotions are evoked by different mechanisms such as events, objects, other people, or phenomena that lead to various consequences manifesting in our body. Automatic affect recognition methods utilize various input types, such as facial expressions, speech, gestures and body language, and physical signals such as electroencephalography (EEG), electromyography (EMG), electrodermal activity, etc. Although emotion recognition has been investigated for many years, it is still an active research area because of the growing interest in applications exploiting avatars, animation, neuromarketing, and sociable robots.

This Special Issue invites contributions that address (i) systems and devices for capturing emotions, and (ii) machine-learning techniques of relevance to tackle the issues above. In particular, submitted papers should clearly show novel contributions and innovative applications covering, but not limited to, any of the following topics around emotion recognition:

  • Systems and devices for capturing bio-signals;
  • Affective database creation, experiment datasets;
  • Data pre-processing;
  • Non-intrusive sensor technologies;
  • Emotion recognition using mobile phones and smart bracelet;
  • Smart clothes and emotion;
  • Machine-learning techniques for emotion recognition;   
  • Deep learning for emotion recognition.

20th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Soft Computing ICAISC 2021

The 20th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Soft Computing ICAISC 2021 http://icaisc.eu/ will be held in Zakopane (situated in the High Tatra mountains), Poland in June 20-24, 2021 in Mercure Zakopane Kasprowy Hotel. The conference will provide an excellent opportunity for scientists and engineers to present and discuss the latest scientific results and methods. The conference will include keynote addresses, contributed papers, and numerous lectures and tutorials on a wide range of topics.

The working language of the conference is English. Only original, unpublished papers are invited. Authors should submit an electronic version of papers by the conference web page. The papers should be organized in accordance with a common scientific structure (abstract, state of the art in the field, intention, used methodology, obtained results and references). Papers will undergo double-blind reviewing by an international committee, and accepted on the basis of their scientific merit and relevance to the conference topics. Please prepare anonymized versions of the paper being submitted. Please preserve anonymity by avoiding providing information that may identify the authors in the acknowledgements, links to websites and the literature references. After the notification of acceptance, authors will be allowed to make a correction in accordance with the suggestions of the reviewers and submit final camera-ready papers in Latex format only. The conference proceedings will be published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence distributed among the participants during the conference. Accepted papers must be presented by the author(s) personally to be published in the conference proceedings.

Springer sponsors the ICAISC 2021 Best Paper Award by providing an amount of EUR 1,000.
