The Immersive Learning Research Network (iLRN) welcomes submissions for its Immersive Learning Project Showcase & Competition as part of the iLRN 2020 Virtual Conference (http://immersivelrn.org/ilrn2020). This is an opportunity for academics, students, professionals, and institutions/organizations to gain widespread exposure and acclaim for their innovative work in developing VR/AR/MR (XR) and immersive experiences that support learning in a range of sectors and contexts, as well as to have the work considered for inclusion in the Collection of Exemplars that is being developed as part of The State of XR and Immersive Learning project.

Showcase & Competition contributions may be in the form of:

– a 2D or 360-degree video demonstration/tour/walkthrough of the project/experience;
– a 2D web-based gallery of graphics, animations, and/or other multimedia artifacts;
– an interactive 3D virtual world or environment highlighting and demonstrating the key features and elements of the project/experience;
– a combination of any of the above.

In the first instance, prospective contributors are asked to complete the proposal form no later than May 11, 2020, and those who are shortlisted to participate will be contacted by May 18, 2020 with further instructions. Shortlisted contributors must register for the conference by May 23, 2020 and will have until June 15, 2020 to prepare their Showcase contribution.

#### Proposal Shortlisting and Preparation of Showcase Contributions ####

The process used to shortlist and select proposals to progress to the Showcase & Competition will give preference to individuals and teams who will also be delivering papers/presentations at the virtual conference that are related to their intended Showcase & Competition contributions.

Each individual or team contributor whose proposal is selected will be assigned a WebXR space in which to construct their Showcase contribution (exhibit) by populating it with a variety of media types and artifacts. A link to the experience itself, or to a website/portal from which it can be downloaded, may also optionally be included, but only if it is freely accessible and not behind a paywall. Additionally, subject to space availability, it may be possible for contributors to supply Unity assets for porting into the virtual conference venue where the conference activities will take place.

Showcase & Competition contributors must register for and attend the conference, and will need to make themselves available to meet and present to/talk with conference attendees about their projects at designated times during the conference program schedule.

Awards will be presented for the best contributions, and individuals/teams whose projects are selected for the State of XR and Immersive Learning Exemplar Collection will receive Certificates of Commendation.

#### Judging Criteria ####

Contributions will be evaluated based on the following key criteria:

1. Demonstration of appropriate and innovative use of the unique affordances of the relevant technologies/media (in both the project being showcased as well as the Showcase contribution itself);
2. Application of established and sound learning/instructional design principles;
3. Adoption of a learning-science-informed and research-grounded approach to the design and development process;
4. Accommodation of and support for diverse learners, including marginalized groups;
5. Strength and thoughtfulness of connections made to one or more 2020 State of XR and Immersive Learning topic categories;
6. Overall contribution to research and/or practice in the field of XR and immersive learning.

As a central part of iLRN's mission is the cultivation of an evidence base to guide/inform the creation of effective and engaging XR and immersive learning experiences, contributions that include an empirical evaluation component attesting to "what works" (and/or what doesn't!) will be looked upon favorably by the Awards Committee-although such a component is not a strict requirement. Additionally, in line with iLRN's open science-open design-open access ethos, we strongly encourage and will give preference to contributions showcasing XR and immersive learning experiences that have been made freely and openly available to the public (e.g., under a Creative Commons license).

Artificial Intelligence and Information analysis (AIIA) Lab, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece is proud to launch the live CVML Web lecture series

Lectures abstract

 

1) Structure from Motion 

Summary: Image-based 3D Shape Reconstruction, Stereo and multiview imaging principles. Feature extraction and matching. Triangulation and Bundle Adjustment. Mathematics of structure from motion. UAV image capturing. Optimal UAV flight trajectory/flight height/viewing angle/image overlap ratio. Pre/post-processing for 3D reconstruction: flat surface smoothing/mesh modification/isolated point removal.  Structure from motion applications: 3D face reconstruction from uncalibrated video. 3D landscape reconstruction. 3D building/monument reconstruction and modeling,

 

2) 2D convolution and correlation algorithms

Summary: 2D convolutions play an extremely important role in machine learning, as they form the first layers of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). They are also very important for computer vision (template matching through correlation, correlation trackers) and in image processing (image filtering/denoising/restoration). 3D convolutions are very important for machine learning (video analysis through CNNs) and for video filtering/denoising/restoration. 1D convolutions are extensively used in digital signal processing (filtering/denoising)  and analysis (also through CNNs). Therefore, 2D convolution and correlation algorithms are very important both for machine learning and for signal/image/video processing and analysis. As their computational complexity is of the order O(N^4), their fast execution is a must. This lecture will overview 1D/2D linear and cyclic convolution. Then it will present their fast execution through FFTs, resulting in algorithms having computational complexity of the order O(Nlog2N), O(N^2log2N) for 1D and 2D convolutions respectively. Parallel block-based 2D convolution/calculation methods will be overviewed.  The use of 2D convolutions in Convolutional Neural Networks will be presented.

 

Lecturer: Prof. Ioannis Pitas (IEEE fellow, IEEE Distinguished Lecturer, EURASIP fellow) received the Diploma and PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, both from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Since 1994, he has been a Professor at the Department of Informatics of the same University. He served as a Visiting Professor at several Universities.

His current interests are in the areas of image/video processing, machine learning, computer vision, intelligent digital media, human centered interfaces, affective computing, 3D imaging and biomedical imaging. He has published over 1138 papers, contributed in 50 books in his areas of interest and edited or (co-)authored another 11 books. He has also been member of the program committee of many scientific conferences and workshops. In the past he served as Associate Editor or co-Editor of 9 international journals and General or Technical Chair of 4 international conferences. He participated in 70 R&D projects, primarily funded by the European Union and is/was principal investigator/researcher in 42 such projects. He has 30000+ citations to his work and h-index 81+ (Google Scholar).

Lectures will consist primarily of live lecture streaming and PPT slides. Attendees (registrants) need no special computer equipment for attending the lecture. They will receive the lecture PDF before each lecture and will have the ability to ask questions real-time. Audience should have basic University-level undergraduate knowledge of any science or engineering department (calculus, probabilities, programming, that are typical e.g., in any ECE, CS, EE undergraduate program).  More advanced  knowledge (signals and systems, optimization theory, machine learning) is very helpful but nor required.

    Applied Emotion/Mind-Aware Neuroimaging in Real-world Human-Robot Symbiosis with Heart, Mind, and Soul

     

     

    Motivation and goals

     

    Wearable technologies that connect human with the surrounding smart environment could potentially replace the cellphone and other cumbersome tablet/laptops to become the next generation human-computer interface. It opens a new frontier of using stretchable, sticky and flexible body sensors, galvanic skin response (GSR), photoplethysmogram (PPG), inertial measurement unit (IMUs), and neurophysiological electrodes, such as EEG/EMG/ECG/EKG to measure various brain and body activity signals, and decode meaningful information for multi-modal interactions.

     

    Such dramatic shift of paradigm can be manifested in many technology development from big companies/startups, like Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Samsung and Neuralink (Elon Musk), etc., to build more mobile, invisible, ubiquitous, compact computing platforms, such as smart watches, smart glasses, smart headphones, VR/AR headsets, and state-of-the-art Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs), in which the devices embed various kinds of sensors and electrodes to directly/indirectly interpret human body states, intentions, emotions and/or even high level motivations from neural signals, while other “out-of-body” sensors, like cameras, could not observe.

     

    Along with the scientific and practical implementation challenges of such technology, the personal big data collection also brings a lot of social norms, privacy and ethical issues as well. In this Special Session, we want to solicit impactful paper contributions to push the boundary to the limit, in order to explore the most critical issues in applying this futuristic technology to the real-world environment. Since our human have complex behaviors, which involve multiple disciplinary explanations, the technologies that closely-interact and solve the human-related problems should also reflect such complex multidisciplinary nature. As part of purely theoretical findings, we will also create a multidisciplinary educational and discussion forum, in which we will have industrial applications, art and design, consumer electronics, embedded system and mobile computing, Human-Robot Neural Interaction (HRNI) user experience/interface (UX/UI) design, and social norm and ethical paper presentations to discuss the emotion/mind-aware data collection and the use of AI to fully release the potential of this promising technology. Hopefully our dedicated effort of organizing this Special Session focusing on Emotion/Mind-Aware Neuroimaging could make such futuristic promising technology more human-centered, with more human-like heart, mind, and soul to interact with the people, the robot, and all other smart IoT devices, to enable a seamless Human-Robot Symbiotic society.

    Due to COVID-19, we are now accepting "Video Live Streaming" and/or "Video Recording" presentations, so the accepted papers can be presented remotely! The paper submission deadline has been extended to the 29th of April to provide authors of the time to produce their best work, despite the many additional challenges we are facing at the moment. We are considering alternatives to allow for remote participation to both the main conference and workshops should disruptions still occur in September.
