In the Big Data Era, the field of Health Care -where data volumes on diagnostic processes, predicting epidemics, improving quality of life, and reducing costs are constantly increasing- requires new innovative ways of assessment. This Special Issue aims at providing selected examples of approaches and case studies where such advanced methods are found beneficial and have a positive impact on patients’ lives. It will be of reference on how Βig Data Analytics can help improve Health Care, better monitor health and medicine related topics, as well as address the issues of reducing costs and increasing economic benefits.
This Special Issue welcomes both theoretical and applied submissions, including but not limited to the following topics:

PhD/postdoc positions in Medical Image Analysis (VICOROB, University of Girona)

PhD and postdoc grants in Medical Image Analysis (Computer Vision and Robotics group) University of Girona Girona, Spain

We have new exciting positions available within the Medical Imaging Lab of the Computer Vision and Robotics Group (VICOROB) to start during 2020. Detailed information about the research group can be found at https://visio.udg.edu/. These positions are associated with the current medical research projects which aim at developing image processing and machine learning (Deep Learning) techniques. In particular, the focus is on the extraction of biomarkers from different image modalities (MRI, US, DBT) and the development of predictive models for different diseases (mainly neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis or breast cancer).

The positions offer a competitive stipend for the graduate students (equivalent to the Spanish research scale). The nature of these positions will provide the students with opportunities to work on interdisciplinary collaborative projects.

Applicants for the PhD Studentships will need to have a good honours degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or another related area. A Master degree (or equivalent) in the field of Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or another related area is also essential for this post. High levels of ability in computing and programming skills (Matlab, Python, Keras, Pytorch, etc) are required for the PhD and postdoc positions. Research experience in image processing, computer vision, or machine learning is also desirable. All applicants must be fluent in spoken and written English.

En esta primera comunicación es un gusto invitarlos al envío de aportes al VI Simposio de Historia de la Informática en América Latina y Caribe (VI SHIALC). En esta oportunidad el SHIALC se realizará en forma conjunta con el II Simposio Argentino de Historia, Tecnologías e Informática (II SAHTI) en el marco de las 49 Jornadas Argentina de Informática e Investigación Operativa (49 JAIIO) organizadas por la Sociedad Argentina de Informática e Investigación Operativa (SADIO) y la Facultad de Ingeniería de la Universidad de Buenos Aires. Ambos eventos se realizarán en forma unificada compartiendo la convocatoria, los trabajos enviados, el comité de programa, la inscripción y los Anales con los trabajos presentados.

 

            Los Simposios de Historia de la Informática en América Latina y Caribe (SHIALC) comenzaron a realizarse de forma bianual desde 2010, a partir de un primer encuentro regional de investigadores y protagonistas de dicha historia realizado en Santiago de Chile en 2008. Se han presentado y debatido desde sus inicios más de 100 artículos provenientes de 10 países latinoamericanos y publicado dos compilaciones y tres libros de actas que pueden consultarse en https://www.cos.ufrj.br/shialc/. El horizonte de este evento regional es consolidar un espacio de intercambio y divulgación científica para investigadores, académicos e interesados en la historia del desarrollo de la informática en la región que, desde diversos enfoques y miradas, analicen actores, procesos, políticas, agendas e instituciones que forman parte tanto de la historia del campo así como las problemáticas teórico-metodológicas vinculadas a sus archivos y fuentes. 

 

            El Simposio de Historia, Tecnología e Informática (SAHTI) es un espacio reciente de análisis, debate interdisciplinario y comunicación pública acerca de los estudios históricos sobre las tecnologías y la informática en la Argentina dentro de las JAIIO – SADIO, uno de los eventos más importantes y antiguos de la Informática en el país y América Latina (http://48jaiio.sadio.org.ar/simposios/SAHTI). Uno de sus focos de interés es el relevamiento de los relatos y testimonios del desarrollo de la informática, incluyendo diversos procesos de índole público, privado, productivo, científico, político, etc. a través de los aportes de los participantes de estas historias y con los que se busca conformar un archivo histórico-testimonial del campo.

           

Invitamos a participar a investigadores, docentes, estudiantes, profesionales y expertos interesados en compartir sus aportes a los estudios históricos sobre las tecnologías digitales y la informática en América Latina. En breve se publicarán los ejes temáticos del evento como también las características formales de las colaboraciones.

Call for papers for Vision Research special issue on “Calibrating the visual system”

Calibrating the visual system
 
Vision Research seeks contributions for a special issue entitled ‘Calibrating the visual system’. Visual systems evolved according to consistent characteristics of the environment and task demands of the species, but also to be malleable in order to adapt to specific perturbations in the stimulus and the observer. The special issue aims to integrate work on the calibration of visual processes in relation to the stable properties of natural scenes or to variations in the sensory stimulus or the individual’s sensory apparatus, in different visual domains and over different time scales. Of particular interest are processes of short, medium and long-term adaptation, and processes to maintain perceptual constancy, as well as processes that occur during visual development. We are also seeking papers concerned with the benefits, costs, and limitations of these adaptations for optimal encoding of visual information, and for learning and representing relevant stimuli in the environment. We are seeking both original research articles and reviews on this subject, covering diverse methods including psychophysics, physiology, neuroimaging, and computational modelling

Manuscripts are submitted through the Special Issue portal of the submission system and go through peer review as usual.

Each article in the special issue is assigned a unique identifier and once the article is accepted will be published in a regular journal issue as soon as available. The unique identifier allows us to simultaneously add the article to the special issue on ScienceDirect which is gradually built up as individual articles are published online.
 
We do provide Shared Link of the final published version to the corresponding authors with 50 days free access so that they can share it.
